Volunteer Devoted to Dogs - Dog walking is by far the most popular way people choose to volunteer at the Shelter. It is a benefit to both the volunteer by providing exercise with a canine companion, as well as to the dogs through socialization and stimulation outside of the Shelter environment. Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of 20 minutes for each dog walked. Volunteers must be 13-years old or older to participate in the Dog Walking Program. Volunteers under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Other dog opportunities may include combing and brushing suitable dogs, or just spending some quiet time in an approved Shelter setting with a canine that needs a little extra TLC. Those interested in spending time with the dogs are asked to visit the Shelter during viewing hours (noon til closing) and speak with a Kennel Attendant to find a suitable dog and take part in a brief orientation to go over dog care policies. Cat Cuddlers - Are you a feline fancier? We have the purr-fect job for you! Cat cuddlers spend one-on-one time with the kitties at the shelter, either up close within their cages or in an approved shelter area. This program helps to enhance the lives of cats waiting for their forever homes and provides stress relief for longer-term cats by having a chance to stretch their legs and get some extra attention. Volunteers must be 13-years old or older to participate in the Cat Cuddling Program. Volunteers under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Other cat opportunities may include combing and brushing suitable felines, playing and providing treats. Those interested in spending time with the cats are asked to visit the Shelter during viewing hours (noon til closing) and speak with a Kennel Attendant to find a suitable cat and take part in a brief orientation to go over cat care policies. Shelter Helper (AKA “Dirty Jobs”) - Want to pitch in and help in a more “behind the scenes” sort of role? Shelter Helpers help to wash and dry cat and dog dishes, wash, dry, fold and put away the pet bedding laundry, sort recycling and deliver it to SARCAN. They can also assist with snow shovelling/removal, raking leaves, lawn mowing, water grass, and help tend to the plants in the pet cemetery. The job of a Shelter Helper is much appreciated by the shelter staff, as having volunteers assist with these projects enables them to directly concentrate on animal care. Volunteers must be at least 18-years old or be accompanied by an adult to participate in the Shelter Helpers Program. An brief orientation is required prior to volunteer commencement. Fundraising Events - The Shelter holds many special events throughout the year - see our complete list on back of form. Fundraising Event Volunteers help with event set-up, ticket selling, poster distribution, penny parade and prize pick-ups. We are always looking for helpers and organizers, and will be holding volunteer orientations on a quarterly basis. Volunteers must be at least 18-years old, or be accompanied by an adult, to participate in Fundraising Events. For more information on upcoming events, please contact the Fundraising and Promotions Coordinator. You can be involved in as many programs as you wish! |
