The Moose Jaw Humane Society has been in contract negotiations with the City of Moose Jaw relating to its pound keeping services since December 2011. Under a contract signed in 2007, the humane society has been carrying out these services for approximately $125,000 annually. At the shelter’s AGM on April 16th, board president John LaBuick and financial chair Dave Field made a presentation to the shelter’s membership illustrating the poor condition of the humane society’s facility and laying out the costs incurred by the MJHS over the course of the years following the signing of that contract.

The actual expenses for the shelter to provide these services is in excess of $380,000, however, only twenty percent of the shelter’s overall income is derived from the city to cover these costs. In addition, there is no allowance in the current agreement for replacement due to wear and tear on shelter equipment, vehicles, and its building, not to mention costs related to general overhead expenses. Today's Adoption Story

Jared and Checkers
Our story today is about two formerly stray cats. Each year, the MJHS looks after an average of 1500 animals, which generally breaks down to about 600 dogs and 900 cats. Of those animals, at any given time, at least 90% of their population is made up of strays that come in through the pound keeping services we provide for the City of Moose Jaw. After the first 72 hours of impound has elapsed, the shelter can either euthanize these unclaimed pets, (which we feel is absolutely unacceptable) or to adopt the dogs and cats out (which is the path we have chosen to take).

The MJHS in the News

Here is the link to the CBC story about our pound keeping contract stalemate with the City of Moose Jaw, thank you to Tory Gillis for coming out to cover the story!

Back in 2007, when the most current contract was signed, the MJHS had asked for an increase to $233,195, plus equipment depreciation and replacement costs, which was what they calculated it ACTUALLY cost to run the pound services SIX YEARS AGO. They only received $105,000 plus COLA.

Six years later, it costs EVEN MORE to run these services, and if they had paid a more fair fee for service back in 2007 as requested, this increase to FAIR funding would not seem so severe now. The costs have not tripled, but rather the requested amount is higher because it accurately reflects what it actually costs to provide these services. This is why we have NOT been able to save any money for a new building project, something any visitor to the shelter can easily see that we are in desperate need of.
